Our Constitution and the Rule of Law

"The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny." –  James Madison, Jan 30, 1788.

The United States Constitution has been a blueprint for democracy for America and for the World. But no constitution can guarantee the vision of its founders unless leaders do their part to uphold it. Today the guarantees of our constitution for Americans are at risk.

In 2025 the Trump Administration has consistently violated the clear language of court orders, engaged in an unprecedented pattern of contempt of courts, verbally attacked judges, and fired agency Inspector Generals and other officials who have simply tried to do their job consistent with their oath to the Constitution. Trump officials have used the power of government to threaten and silence voices of dissent, clear violations of the First Amendment.

And the Republican majority in Congress has, time after time, refused to use the power given to them in our Constitution to check that abuse of power.

We don’t take oaths to kings, and that is not our America.

In Congress I will support:

  • Immediately curbing the abuse of emergency powers claimed by the President to enact tariffs due to a supposed trade emergency, or to violate environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act in order to greenlight mineral or fossil fuel projects due to a supposed energy emergency, or claiming emergency powers to suspend Congressionally authorized programs.

  • Legislation to reform the National Emergencies Act (NEA) to clarify and tighten Congressional authority of Presidential actions and prevent such abuses in the future.

  • Calling for the resignation, and if necessary investigation and impeachment of agency directors and cabinet officials who violate the Constitution, violate federal law, and who display gross incompetence and reckless behavior.

  • Legislation to further clarify and reinforce the role of Congress as a co-equal branch of government, and create meaningful penalties and consequences for the administration’s failure to adhere to court orders.
